Why is my internet slow? 10 reasons and quick fixes
You're sitting in front of your computer, waiting for a page to load, but the clock just keeps ticking. Netflix turns pixelated, the Teams call stutters, and in your favorite game, you're being shot at every second while you're still waiting at the spawn point. Familiar, right? If you often ask yourself, why is my internet slow, even though you're paying the bill, you're not alone with this problem.
A slow internet connection can be caused by surprisingly many small but easily fixable issues. In this article, we've compiled the 10 most common problems and their practical solutions – ones you can even try tonight.
Before we dive in, it's worth assessing your current situation with a internet speed test Note down the result, then check at the end of the article how much it has improved!
The router is in a bad spot – this is the number one culprit
The placement of the router is one of the most common reasons why Wi-Fi is slow at home. If the router is lurking on the floor, in a cabinet, in the corner of the apartment, or behind the TV, the signal has to struggle for every single meter.
The solution: Place the router in a central position, ideally in the middle of the apartment, high up (on a shelf or wall), in an open area. The router's antennas radiate vertically – if the devices are on the same level, the antenna should point straight up. If you use the internet on multiple floors, it's worth tilting the antennas at a 45-degree angle for maximum coverage.
The router is too old – technology has left it behind
A 5-6 year old router simply cannot keep up with today's demands. If the router only supports the Wi-Fi 4 (802.11n) standard, its maximum theoretical speed is around 300 Mbps – in practice, you get a fraction of that. Moreover, these devices cannot handle the parallel load of multiple devices.
The solution: Switch to a Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) router. These modern devices are up to 4-5 times faster, handle multiple devices better, and have more efficient signal propagation. A good quality Wi-Fi 6 router is available from 30-50 thousand forints, and it pays for itself in a weekend of hassle-free internet browsing.
Wi-Fi interference – you're not alone in the airwaves
The 2.4 GHz band is extremely congested. Your neighbors' Wi-Fi, the microwave oven, cordless phones, and even Bluetooth devices can interfere with the signal. While 2.4 GHz penetrates walls better, it is already outdated in terms of speed.
The solution: Switch to the 5 GHz band in your router settings. 5 GHz is faster and less congested, although it has a shorter range. Most modern routers can already handle bands automatically (band steering), but it's worth checking if it's enabled in the settings. If your router supports it, it's worth checking which of the 2.4 GHz channels (1, 6, or 11) is the least congested – you can easily check this with a smartphone Wi-Fi analyzer app.
Too many devices are sharing the network
In an average Hungarian household, 8-12 devices are now connected to the internet at the same time: smartphones, laptops, tablets, smart TVs, game consoles, smart home devices, printers. Each device shares the total bandwidth. If someone is streaming in 4K, it can easily consume the entire bandwidth.
The solution: Use the QoS (Quality of Service) setting on your router. This allows you to prioritize important devices and applications – for example, you can give priority to your work laptop and video calls over the game console or smartphones updating in the background. If you regularly watch movies in 4K, you need at least 25 Mbps bandwidth per device for stable streaming.
Background programs and updates are eating up bandwidth
We often don't notice it, but applications running in the background consume significant bandwidth. Windows updates, Steam game downloads, cloud synchronization (Google Drive, OneDrive, iCloud), antivirus updates – all work silently in the background.
The solution: Open the Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc on Windows, Activity Monitor on macOS) and see which applications are using the network. For important programs, set them to update only at certain times, or use a „metered connection” setting to limit large updates. On Windows 11, you can control bandwidth under Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Limit download bandwidth.
Outdated network card or device in your computer
It's no use having a gigabit subscription and a top-tier router if the network card in your laptop or desktop computer only supports speeds up to 100 Mbps. Many older laptops still have a 100 Mbps Ethernet port or a Wi-Fi 4 wireless card.
The solution: Use a USB Wi-Fi adapter that supports Wi-Fi 6 (available from 5-10 thousand forints). Check the type and speed of your network card in the computer's device manager. If you have a desktop computer, it might be worth getting a PCIe Wi-Fi 6 card, which will solve the problem in the long run.
Incorrect Ethernet cabling
Many people don't know that Ethernet cables also have categories. An old CAT5 cable can handle a maximum of 100 Mbps, while a CAT5e can already handle 1 Gbps. CAT6 and CAT6a cables can go up to 10 Gbps. If the cable is poorly crimped, damaged, or too long (over 20 meters), it can also cause speed loss.
The solution: Replace old cables with CAT6 or CAT6a cables. Make sure the cable is not kinked, tangled, or run next to strong electrical wires, as this can cause interference. A wired connection always allows for more accurate measurement than Wi-Fi.
ISP issues – it's not always your fault
Sometimes the problem is on the provider's side. During peak hours (6-10 PM), the network can become overloaded, especially on older cable networks. There could be an issue with a poorly configured ONT (optical modem), old coaxial cable, or even the provider's switch.
The solution: First, always run an internet speed test and check if the connection matches your subscription. If there is a significant discrepancy, contact your provider's customer service. Take multiple measurements at different times – show them the evidence. In Hungary, you can find detailed information about the largest providers on the Telekom, Yettel and Digi speed test pages.
Important: with mobile providers, weather and network load play an even bigger role. If you use mobile internet, it's worth comparing 4G and 5G speeds as well.
External factors and the impact of weather
This may sound unbelievable at first, but weather can indeed affect internet speed. Heavy rain, snowstorms, or strong winds can disrupt microwave relay stations, which are primarily used by wireless (WiMAX, mobile internet) providers. In cable TV networks, aging external cabling is also sensitive to moisture.
The solution: If you only experience slowdowns in bad weather, it is likely weather-dependent. It's worth running a broadband speed test, at such times to have a baseline for comparison. If the problem is frequent, it may be worth switching providers or switching to a fiber optic subscription, which is significantly more resistant to weather effects.
Your subscription package is too low
There may be nothing wrong with the network, devices, or router – you simply have a package that is no longer sufficient for today's needs. In 2026, 200-300 Mbps is the recommended minimum for an average household if multiple people use the internet simultaneously and there are high-bandwidth applications. If you are still on an old 50 or 100 Mbps package, don't be surprised if YouTube stutters.
The solution: Check your current subscription speed on SpeedTest365, then compare it with available packages. At many providers, 500 Mbps or even 1 Gbps subscriptions are already available for 5-10 thousand forints. Switching can often be done online in minutes, and the speed increase will be immediately noticeable.
How to check if the connection has actually improved?
After trying the solutions above, run another internet speed test on SpeedTest365 and compare the result with the first measurement. For accuracy, always connect via Ethernet cable, close background applications, and preferably perform the test during the day, outside peak hours. Here are the measured data to watch:
- Download speed (Mbps) – how much data is arriving at your device
- Feltöltési sebesség (Mbps) – mennyi adatot tudsz elküldeni
- Ping (ms) – a válaszidő, játékoknál és videóhívásoknál kritikus
- Jitter (ms) – a ping ingadozása, ami a stabil kapcsolatot jelzi
